Swedish Vacuum Cleaners

I’m sorry to break it to you but these vacuum cleaners aren’t very good when it comes to dust. But what they lack in the tidying up department they make up for in taste!

The lovely little rolls are named after what vacuum cleaners looked like in 1920’s, but according to Wikipedia they might also be named a vacuum cleaner as they are made out of the a bakery’s “yesterday’s cake and crumbs”.

Regardless of name origin these bad boys are truly delicious. With a soft and gooey centre, marzipan wrapping and ends dipped in chocolate it could be my absolute favourite thing to eat (apart from potato bake…) and while it might be the first time I make them myself but it certainly isn’t the last!

Next time I might go classic though and omit the “roses” so I haven’t included them in the recipe but if you want to make some too I’d recommend looking at some tutorials on YouTube as I’m so bad at making them myself. I need some more practise!

Anyway! Here’s the recipe. I should add that if you’re not keen on making them yourself they are in IKEA’s around the world too! Happy eating 🌷


Makes 20 (or so, all depends on how big you make them!)


100g soft butter

1/2 cup icing sugar

1tbs vanilla bean paste

4 tbsp cocoa

500g sponge cake

5 tbsp Swedish arrack aroma or 1 1/2 tbsp rum

500g marzipan

2 tbsp green or pink food colouring (but start with a little and work your way up until desired colour!

100 dark chocolate


1. The following three steps can all be made in a food processor or with electric beaters. Start with whisking the butter with the sugar and vanilla until fluffy.

2. Add the cocoa and whisk a little more.

3. Crumble the sponge cake in and whisk until completely smooth. Add the arrack or rum.

4. Place the dough in the fridge for half an hour (I often skip that though so works without it!

5. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

6. Mix the marzipan with the food colouring until desired colour and roll out thinly. Cut into long 6cm thick strips.

7. Shape the dough into 5-6 cm long logs and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

8. Roll up the logs in the marzipan so that they all look nice and even. Place all logs in the freezer for a bit to make the next step easier. I didn’t with these ones but I will next time!

9. Melt the chocolate and dip the ends. Decorate with little roses or something else if you like or let chill and eat!
